| Area History A story of persistence in freedom of expression, artistic integrity, and economic independence in the face of growing global corporate commercial fashion interests at all levels. Across 16 consecutive editions, Area has provided a very special artistic platform for the newest and the best of independent design... 1998-2003
Informal discussions among independent men's designers for positive system change in Paris first began in late 1998. These discussions were triggered by the fall in the men's market which coincided with the selloff of the original SEHM by Claude Miserey and the Federation Francaise to Fair Team nv, a Dutch finance speculation company with no experience in fashion, which proceeded to also buy Tranoi. Both SEHM and Tranoi deteriorated under Fair Team. Christine Bonini ex-director of the extremely successful Nouvel Espace section of SEHM founded a new show named Casabo, which for many represented the new hopes to revive the Paris men's industry, which was by then sliding into crisis and losing much ground to Milan. Bonini and Casabo enjoyed some success from 1999 to 2001, and did more than their share of helping various designers, and lobbying for much needed attention and support at the broad system-wide level of Paris fashion to the Chambre Syndicale, France's governing body of fashion. However, over time it became clear that the Chambre's priorities lay in the large luxury groups which were currently merging into lesser numbers of firms but bigger entities whose main business was women's fashion and particularly accessory and perfume sales, and important actions needed to save the men's industry were ignored or never taken. Casabo slowly shifted its own emphasis towards women's by joining and eventually selling its operation to Sodes SA, a major trade show operator of the PAP Comexpo group at the Porte de Versailles in the summer of 2003. By January 2003, independent designers in Paris had seen continuous decline in the attendance of international buyers and journalists for the men's fashion week, and less and less options available for trade shows and presentations. Casabo indicated to its exhibitors in January that it would not operate during the July 2003 men's week. With no other option, designers were quickly forced to begin discussions to organize something themselves. Casabo eventually did mount a small show of about 20 exhibitors in July 2003 at the Hotel St James. But by this time the writing on the wall was clear, designers would have to fend for themselves and inititate system changes on their own urgently or there might be no options left. And these changes would have to address the overall changes that had taken place in the market and the world, and adapt accordingly. Working by telephone and fax, a small group of designers agreed to a plan to test a new approach and start a new concept to serve the needs and interests of the independent designer. For the first time in decades, a new active generation of practicing designers aimed to have a voice in the process of where Paris fashion might be able to go.

"Concentrate" The 11th edition of Area was dedicated to providing retailers with a single unique solution for designer collections in a challenging fashion market and world economy. It was one of the most exclusive showrooms to see, and proposed an edited alternative to the overabundance of the season’s men’s trade show events taking place simultaneously in Berlin and Paris. In reaction to the industry-wide chaos of forcing buyers to be in two cities at the same time and choose from hundreds of derivative and non-performing brands and marks —Area assembled a concentrated group of true artisan and designer collections for multimark stores in specific and critical commercial product categories such as hand made jeans, printed t-shirts, creative luxury sportswear, and leather bags and accessories. Only nine independent designers from 5 countries were invited to participate. The event marked the first implementation of the AICI Sales Training manual and set a record for fixed buyer appointments. Several of the designers experienced record sales and the event was very well attended by top international buyers. Area Defiles by Geoffrey B. Small "Ode to Toussaint Louverture" and FQ R "Hallucinosis" were covered by Uomo Collezioni. And the event was aided by coverage in both L'Uomo Vogue and Vogue Pelle magazines. "A new kind of luxury" A creative reaction to outdated luxury fashion concepts that dominated the business, the show followed the extremely successful Area men’s show presented in January, and was dedicated to providing retailers with a precise array of new luxury concepts for designer merchandise. A controversial e-mail promotional campaign emphasized the changing nature and values of the luxury-market consumer and the resulting need to introduce an alternative to industry conformity. The name was quickly copied by a large German trade show company for an exhibition in Moscow the following season. The event itself set a new record for fixed buyer appointments, record sales for several participants and was well attended by top buyers. July 2006 AREA edition 13. "Comeback: New Collections from 2 Masters" With imitations of its concept being launched by both trade shows and other designers in Paris, Milan, Berlin and Barcelona-- Area staged a very new and different exhibition for its 13th edition. After revolutionizing the industry with presentations ranging from between 7-22 independent collections, a special opportunity was taken for Area to dedicate its space to just two independent designer collections on a new and much larger scale. The show presented the latest works from Japanese pioneer Kohshin Satoh, and American avant-gardist Geoffrey B. Small. Over 60 years of combined international design experience were represented by the 2 artists. Kohshin Satoh was one of Japan’s pioneers of the Tokyo fashion movement in the late 1970’s where his fashion shows took place in stadiums and were attended by thousands. A longtime friend and designer to the late Miles Davis and Andy Warhol, he was awarded the prestigious Best Designer Prize in Beijing at the China Fashion Week at the end of 2005. His pivotal renewal launch collection was being exclusively introduced at retail in Paris at Maria Luisa, Dantone in Milan and Vertice in London. Geoffrey B. Small started in 1979 winning North America’s largest design competition from over 14,000 entrants. In 1994, he became only the 3rd US-designer to ever show in Paris and be recognized by Paris’ Chambre Syndicale, presaging Jeremy Scott, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and Rick Owens. His radical 18th and 19th-century collections first introduced in Paris in January 2004 at Area, originated a new fashion movement-- since interpreted by John Galliano, Chanel, Balenciaga, Comme des Garcons, Dior Homme, Undercover, Dolce & Gabbana and many others. in 2005, he was named winner of MTV Germany’s Designerama Award for Menswear. The show bypassed previous limitations in being able to show the full extent of a serious designer collection in all its detail, and demonstrated that independent designers were not restricted only to young emerging artists, but that independent designers could also be well experienced and creating important collection brands and trends in the world market. At Area defiles, Small presented his 6th Napoleonic-era treatise "The Last Bucintoro" on the meeting of two republics in Venice at the end of the 18th century. cation: Espace St 3 participants Kohshin Satoh, Geoffrey B. The 8th edition of the Area defiles featured the first Paris runway show in 2 decades from Tokyo designer Kohshin Satoh. The shows which also included Megyn Florence's "Nest" and Geoffrey B.
